Mothers Day is 100 Years Old
Although Mother’s Day 2008 marks its 94rd year of being a national holiday, the first Mother’s Day was celebrated in Grafton, West Virginia in 1908. In May 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared that Mother’s Day was to be celebrated in honor of all moms, living and dead.
One of the country’s first peace activists, Julia Ward Howe wrote the Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870, suggesting that June 2 be set aside as a day to honor all mothers. She also became famous for the song, “Battle Hymn of the Republic”.
For a number of years Ms. Howe spearheaded a celebration called “Mother’s Day of Peace” in Boston. Now the holiday is celebrated on the second Sunday in May and this year it will be on Sunday the 11th.
In 2008, Mother’s Day will be celebrated in some countries by spoiling moms with leisure time and gifts, and in others, in a more personal and less commercial fashion.
Many countries, in the beginning, used the day to show reverence to their mothers and in Britain, people were to travel back to their mother church on that day, bringing the family together at least once each year.
Mother’s Day usually ties up phone lines all over the United States although with so many cell phones in use, land lines may not be as busy as in the past. However, it will still be the one day of the year when the most calls are being made.
The sales of flowers and cards take off on Mother’s Day. There are more cards given out on Mother’s Day than on any other holiday. Flower sales also go through the roof as husbands not only honor their mothers but their wives as well.
Restaurants also see a surge in business. While dad and the children may make mom breakfast in bed, there are not many who want to tackle cooking a full meal when it is easier to take mom and grandma out to a fine restaurant on that day. So don’t forget to make your Mother’s Day dinner reservations early and enjoy the day with your loved ones.
